How to Open an EDB File Without Exchange Server

An EDB file holds every mailbox of an Exchange database and Outlook cannot open it directly. Use a recovery database on a live server or open the file with software on any Windows computer.

  • Recovery database steps with commands
  • Open EDB files without a server
  • Preview mailboxes before you export
  • Works for Exchange 2019 to 2003

1What is it?

What Does an EDB File Hold?

Mailbox data sits in a JET database format that only Exchange can mount.

Exchange Server saves emails, contacts, calendars and notes of every mailbox in the EDB file. Once the database is mounted the Information Store service keeps the file locked.

Outlook, Notepad and file viewers cannot show the content. You need a mounted database or a tool that understands the JET format.

Clean Shutdown Matters

Eseutil /mh shows the state of the database. Clean Shutdown means Exchange can mount the file. Dirty Shutdown means the logs must replay first.

2Why does it happen?

Why Does Direct Access to an EDB File Fail?

These blockers explain why double clicking the file does nothing.

Exchange Locks the File

A mounted database stays locked while the Information Store service uses it.

Dirty Shutdown State

A database that stopped without a clean close refuses to mount until the logs replay.

Closed File Format

Mailboxes sit inside a JET database that no mail client can open.

No Server Available

An old database from a retired server has no Exchange to mount it.

Version Mismatch

A database from a newer Exchange build does not mount on an older server.

Corruption or Lost Logs

Damaged pages or missing log files stop the mount.

3Can I do it myself?

How to Open an EDB File With a Recovery Database

Use a live Exchange server. Enter the commands in the Exchange Management Shell and replace the sample names with your own.

  1. 1Check

    Check the Database State

Enter Eseutil /mh D:\Recovery\db01.edb and find the State line. Clean Shutdown lets you skip the next step.

  2. 2Soft

    Replay the Logs

Enter Eseutil /R E01 /l D:\Recovery\Logs /d D:\Recovery and replace E01 with your log prefix. Check the state again afterward.

  3. 3Create

    Create the Recovery Database

    Enter New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name RDB1 -Server EX01 -EdbFilePath D:\Recovery\db01.edb -LogFolderPath D:\Recovery\Logs then Restart-Service MSExchangeIS then Mount-Database RDB1.

  4. 4Restore

    Restore a Mailbox From It

Enter Get-MailboxStatistics -Database RDB1 to list the mailboxes. Then enter New-MailboxRestoreRequest -SourceDatabase RDB1 -SourceStoreMailbox "User One" -TargetMailbox "User One".

Microsoft explains the switches in the Eseutil guide.

Software that opens the EDB file directly skips the server, the log replay and the mount.

4What are the limits?

When Manual Repair Falls Short

Manual access needs a live server and a healthy database.

Server Required

The recovery database needs a working Exchange server in your network.

One Recovery Database at a Time

Exchange mounts a single recovery database on a server and large jobs queue up behind it.

Damaged Files Fail

A corrupt database fails the mount and needs repair before any mailbox comes out.

5Is there an easier way?

How to Recover Mailboxes With EDB Recovery

RecoveryTools software opens the EDB file without a mount. You skip the log file replay and keep your mailboxes.

  1. 1Download

    Install the Demo

Download Exchange EDB Recovery and install it on any Windows computer. Your Exchange server does not need to be online.

  2. 2Add

    Add the EDB File

Click Add File and select the dismounted EDB file. Linked STM files load when they sit in the same folder.

  3. 3Scan

    Select Quick or Advance Scan

Select Quick scan for light damage and Advance scan for heavy damage that Eseutil cannot repair.

  4. 4Export

    Preview and Export

Preview the mailboxes and export the data to a file format, Office 365 or a live Exchange Server. Demo mode saves 25 items per folder.

Screenshots of every step sit in the Exchange EDB Recovery guide.

Questions About This Exchange Task

Do I need Exchange Server to see the mailboxes?

Enter Eseutil /mh with the path of the file. Look at the State line to see whether the database is clean or dirty.

Is there a free way to look inside an EDB file?

Can I save EDB mailboxes as PST files?

Which Exchange versions does EDB Recovery support?

Exchange Server 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007 and 2003 work in 32 bit and 64 bit editions.
