1Is this my lockout?

Which Lockouts Does SQL Password Recovery Solve?

Match your situation to the list. SQL Password Recovery sets a new password for the locked login and the tool leaves your databases alone.

  • Nobody Knows the SA PasswordSA controls the server. Its password sits in a lost note or an old mailbox.
  • Admin Who Left the CompanyYour only sysadmin moved on and took the password along.
  • Login Failed for User saSQL Server rejects the SA login and applications stop connecting.
  • Inherited Server With No NotesNew teams take over a server that comes without credentials.
  • Forgotten SQL LoginNobody remembers a SQL Server Authentication password and nobody can reset it.
  • Password With Odd CharactersMultilingual characters and symbols make a lost password hard to guess.

Offline Master File

Work on a copy of master.mdf while the server stays out of the picture.

Admin and User Logins

Reset the SA login and any other account listed in the file.

No Server Setup

Scanning needs no SQL Server installation on the computer.

Try the Microsoft Lockout Method First

Microsoft lists four lockout cases. Admin logins got removed, admin groups got removed, the admins left or the SA account has a lost password. Its fix starts SQL Server in single user mode. Any Windows administrator then connects and adds a login to the sysadmin role.

That method needs service downtime and a Windows administrator account. SQL Password Recovery needs neither because it edits a copy of master.mdf. Follow the steps in the Microsoft guide to connect to SQL Server when administrators are locked out.

2What changes?

  • Nobody can sign in as SA
